Nicotine calculator

Enter how much liquid your device holds, its nicotine strength and how long it lasts you. You'll see roughly how much nicotine that is a day, next to the nicotine content of cigarettes.

About 40mg of nicotine per device. About 13mg a day, about the nicotine content of 1 cigarette.

Estimate only. This compares the nicotine in your vape liquid with the nicotine in cigarette tobacco, using 10mg per cigarette (published figures range from about 8 to 15mg). It doesn't show how much nicotine your body absorbs: a smoker takes in about 1mg per cigarette, and how much you absorb from a vape depends on your device and how you puff. Labels aren't always accurate, and some brands measure strength by weight rather than volume. Not medical advice. For help cutting down, talk to a doctor, pharmacist or your local quit service.

How this works

The nicotine in one device is its liquid (in ml) × its strength (in mg/ml), rounded to the nearest mg. Spread over the days it lasts you, that gives your nicotine a day, again rounded to the nearest mg.

To compare with cigarettes, we use 10mg of nicotine per cigarette and round to a whole cigarette. At 20 cigarettes or more a day, we also show packs of 20. A strength given in % is turned into mg/ml by multiplying by 10.

This compares nicotine content, not what your body absorbs. See the full method and sources.

How many puffs a day is a lot?

There's no number of puffs that counts as fine to settle at. Devices, liquids and the way people puff vary so much that a puff count on its own says little about how much nicotine you take in.

That's why the taper planner starts from your own count and steps down from there, rather than comparing you with an average.

How long does a vape last?

It depends on how much liquid it holds and how often you puff, so two people with the same device can get very different lengths of time from it.

Put your own experience into "How long one lasts you" above. The calculator spreads the device's nicotine over that many days.

How many puffs are in a vape?

The puff count on a pack is the manufacturer's own claim, which is why this calculator doesn't use it. How much nicotine a puff delivers varies from person to person, even on the same device, and longer puffs deliver more.

Liquid volume and strength are printed on the label, so the calculator works from those instead.

What does 5% nicotine mean?

Measured by volume, 5% nicotine means 50mg of nicotine in every ml of liquid: a strength in % × 10 gives mg/ml.

Not every label measures it the same way, though. Some give the percentage by weight rather than by volume, which gives a different number for the same liquid. One study found strengths reported inconsistently, with one liquid described as 5% by weight but 5.9% by volume. If your label gives mg/ml, use that figure.

Nicotine salt vs freebase: what's the difference?

The amount of nicotine is the same either way: 20 mg/ml means 20mg of nicotine in each ml, whatever form it's in. That's why the calculator treats them the same.

The difference is how it feels. Nicotine salts are less harsh to inhale than freebase nicotine, which makes higher strengths easier to use.
